Notable facts

  • The 16th-century Ottoman bridge at Mostar was destroyed in 1993 and rebuilt in 2004 using original techniques and stone from the same quarry.
  • Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics; some of the bobsleigh track still stands on Mount Trebević.
  • The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914 triggered World War I.
  • The country has just about 20 km of coastline, at Neum.
