• Belarus is about 40% forest, and Białowieża Forest on the Polish border holds the last large remnant of Europe’s primeval lowland woodland with wild European bison.
• Around a quarter of the population died during World War II — proportionally the heaviest national loss of the war.
• It is one of only two European countries that is entirely landlocked and borders both the EU and Russia.
• Minsk was rebuilt almost from scratch after 1944 in monumental Stalinist style.
